The price is right

Making its debut on the international stage at the recent EMO exhibition was the latest addition to DMG’s EcoLine range of machine tools – the DMU 50 eco.

The original concept behind the EcoLine series of machines was to provide functionality and flexibility at an affordable price, and with the DMU 50 eco CNC universal milling machine, DMG offers its customers a cost-effective route into 5-axis machining.

DMG claims that the DMU 50 eco stands out for high precision and reliability and is well suited to tasks carried out on the shopfloor, the laboratory, as well as in tool, fixture and mould applications. Featuring a sturdy cross slide construction and large, easily accessible machining compartment, the machine lends itself well to one-off production and the 5-axis machining of small-to-medium sized batches.
In addition to an extensive range of standard equipment including swivel rotary NC table, 16 pocket tool changer and centrally lubricated roller recirculating bearings, further highlights include digital drives in all axes for increased dynamics, direct path measuring system (optional) for high precision, functional control technology with the ergonomic Ecoline control panel and 3D software for optimum programming performance and maximum operating convenience.

Build quality is also said to be excellent. XYZ travels of 500mm, 450mm and 400mm respectively and a powerful milling spindle with a maximum speed of 8,000rpm at a torque of 83Nm and a drive rating of 13kW (each at a 40% duty cycle), ensures efficient cutting across a wide range of materials. The integrated NC swivel circular table with digital drives makes it possible to machine complex workpieces in just two clamping positions, and hydraulic table clamping permits a large swivel range of up to 115°, making it possible to perform undercuts up to 20°. Operationally, the machine can handle workpieces of up to 200kg.

The DMU 50 eco offers many program features that users will recognise from high end DMG products. Control is via the ergonomic DMG SlimLinePanel with 15 inch TFT screen, Siemens 810D powerline and ShopMill software and with the program memory capacity and available number of definable zero points and parameters, DMG claims it is setting new standards for entry-level machines.
Standard features also include Ethernet interface and compatibility with compact flash memory cards to ensure fast data exchange as well as short set-up times. The control system can be supplemented by further options to fulfil more complex programming tasks, particularly for shopfloor applications.
