MBDA and NCC launch CMC airframe technologies challenge

MBDA and the NCC are challenging the Ceramic Matrix Composites (CMCs) sector to aid the future of sustained high-speed flight.

The future of flight is heading towards hypersonic speeds. This means there is a need for new airframe materials that can operate at the elevated temperatures that these higher speeds bring.

Together MBDA and the NCC are launching the ‘MBDA Ceramic Matrix Composite Airframe Technology Challenge’ to identify novel CMC materials and manufacturing methods for future airframes.

Successful challengers will receive funding to develop a proof of concept for a temperature resilient airframe forebody, which could lead to a contract for a demonstrator.

The challenge is open now and will run until Friday 17th December. Interested companies can find out more about the challenge process here. A webinar is also being held at 10:00 on Tuesday 23rd November to explain the challenge in more detail and answer any questions interested companies may have.

Simon Wadey, MBDA lead for the Ceramic Matrix Composite Airframe Technology Challenge, said: "We're hoping to hear from a really wide range of entities in response to this challenge. Whether or not they ready for production today, if you think you’ve got suitable CMCs or the manufacturing techniques for them then we're keen to hear from you."

As a trusted partner to the UK Ministry of Defence, MBDA works to ensure that it is always operating at the leading edge of innovation. This is so the country’s armed forces have the capabilities they need both now and in the future. Teaming with the NCC provides MBDA further access to 'beyond' state-of-the-art technology and the best composites engineering capabilities in the world. Not only in the defence sector, but outside it too. This helps ensure MBDA is exploring every opportunity to work with suppliers that share its value for innovation.

Editor's comment: Weather with you

My work office feels unusually cold. As I type this, the BBC weather says it’s 10˚C outside. Hmm, is that typical for the end of April? Anyway, our landlord has deemed that with Spring now in the air, it’s time to turn off the heating and save money. This presents a challenge typing when I can’t feel my fingers.
