In a Q&A session, Composites in Manufacturing spoke to CMS Industries’ sales manager, Giulio Gasparini at the recent Advanced Engineering 2017 show about its range of CNC machines often used for producing large sized components and moulds in manufacturing sectors such as aerospace, marine, automotive and wind energy.

Q: Can you tell us more about CMS and its machine tools?

CMS produces high-speed 5-axis CNC machining centres for the machining of both composite and aluminium components. Our turnover is approximately €100 million and we employ 660 people in our main facility in Italy. Within the composites industry, our products are used for the manufacture of patterns & moulds and also to trim finished parts. Our main target sectors comprise aerospace, automotive, transportation and also wind turbines for the power generation industry.

Q: How are your machines used to manufacture large components?

Quite a large portion of our machines have very large working envelopes. Our range starts at 3m x 2m and goes up to 80m long x 10m, so very large work envelopes for rail industry parts, as well as wind blades and for the marine industry, for example.

Q: Is the demand for large scale machines increasing?

Yes, because after some quiet years, the marine industry is experiencing a gradual ramp-up in demand. The aerospace and automotive sectors are also seeing a steady increase in demand, especially with the application of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) parts for mass production. CMS is growing in every sector and also around the world in many different countries as well.

Q: Why are you exhibiting at this year’s Advanced Engineering 2017?

Advanced Engineering is always a very good show for CMS, firstly because it is very technology-led. CMS is a very technical company and it is in our DNA to be competent engineers. Advanced Engineering gives us the chance to meet most of our customers, and it is always nice to meet and talk to them and hear new ideas and to develop our products based on their various experiences. It also offers us the chance to meet new potential customers and discover new technologies, because it is important to us to know what other exhibitors are promoting at the show.

Our expertise and focus on autoclave support is something that is fairly unique. It means that when we are required to assist in any breakdown, we have engineers readily available, because this is exactly what we focus on. Furthermore, we also have the expertise on the upgrade side because again, this is also what we focus on. With this demand comes our expertise, and in turn we provide a good solution.

Q: What are the benefits of exhibiting at the Advanced Engineering 2017 show?

The Advanced Engineering show is a regular fixture in our diary. Every year, we get to meet high quality professional people, and although we only have a small exhibitor presence, we are here to pretty much ‘speed date’ any potential new customers. It’s also a very efficient way of seeing our existing customers: we can find out about current and future trends coming into the marketplace, attend some of the informative open forums taking place on the showfloor and meet some of our friends in the industry. It’s a fantastic show that offers a high quality of visitor and a high throughput of visitor traffic too.
