Fast, accurate, flexible, words used by CMS to describe its new machine centre for high volume machining of formed composite and aluminium components.

Twin 5-axis spindles with independent movement to maximise machine performance and permit multiple machining modes, including simultaneous cutting of identical components, masked tool change time and simultaneous machining of symmetrical components.

The spindles are CMS designed and fitted on the long established PX5 rotary assembly complete with 12 or 15kW of power (S1) to suit application requirements, HSK connection with each having access to a 30-position tool magazine. A single spindle version is also available.

Compact in design the Ikon minimises the floor-space required for such a large capacity machine and features two vertical mounted tables each 3,100mm x 1,800mm with rotational movement (into and out of machining envelope) which facilitate ergonomic and efficient loading/unloading of components during the machining cycle, furthermore each table benefits from an integrated vacuum clamping system and zero-point location system which simplifies fixture change and location as well as significantly reducing change over times between batches.

CMS has a long history of supplying machining centres for machining and trimming complex shaped components made from aluminium and abrasive composite materials. The Ikon machine features all the core elements gained from this experience including:

  • The fundamental CMS characteristics of design that permit complex shapes to be machined and profiled at high speed without loss of accuracy or surface finish

  • Fully-enclosed work envelope with integrated extraction points, ensuring total operator safety and efficient dust and fume containment

  • Added protection to the machine electrical elements for reliable machining of Carbon fibre parts

  • Bellows, double seals and scrapers ensure the slide systems are protected

  • Special sealing systems on the spindles to prevent the ingress of dust generated during the machining process

As with all CMS machines installed in the UK, service support is provided direct from the Group’s Nottingham technical centre which maintains a telephone help desk, as well as employing a number of factory trained engineers to ensure a fast and efficient response should help be required, whilst the experienced sales and application team can advise on all elements required to ensure a successful machine installation, including, cutting tools, programming software, tool-holding and extraction.
