A Lancashire motorcycle enthusiast is at the Dakar Rally 2017 after a Preston company helped by supplying components for the new powerful, lightweight bike.

Lyndon Poskitt, of St Michael's on Wyre, will tackle the gruelling 5,700-mile rally, which began in Paraguay on 2 January 2017 and concludes in Argentina two weeks later.

And to make it all the more challenging, he'll be competing without a support crew, undertaking his own repairs and modifications at the end of each day - all while documenting the adventure for a new film.

Preston-based Attwater Group, the industrial laminates and machining specialist, has stepped in once more to help prepare the bike for its journey.

Poskitt first undertook the Dakar Rally in 2013, with Attwater helping to build a more efficient bike for his second attempt. So far, he's travelled almost 100,000 miles across 50 countries in five continents on the bike.

Poskitt explained: "This journey is impossible without the help of sponsors such as Attwater. The challenge was to add power to the bike while reducing its weight. Attwater helped supply some of the composite parts as well as a number of parts for use in the service areas to help keep my evening work easier and cleaner. Their experience in this field was a massive help and the total weight of the bike is down 10% from 2013, which improves handling and reduces rider fatigue."

Technical director Dave Swarbrick said: "The Dakar Rally is the longest and most arduous race in the world. Lyndon will be attempting to improve on his 46th place finish in 2013, and we have been delighted to help. Lyndon has improved the power while we have been able to replace some aluminium parts with carbon fibre alternatives, which has reduced much of the weight and makes the bike easier to ride."

Poskitt will be posting daily updates so that followers back home can track his action. Search for Lyndon Poskitt on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
