Lightweight electric vehicle engineering showcased at JEC World

Williams Advanced Engineering will showcase its world-leading capabilities in composites technology at JEC World 2018 in Paris.

The company will present its lightweight electric vehicle (EV) platform, which also demonstrates its proprietary capabilities in composite materials and processes as well as in battery technologies.

The innovative lightweight EV platform concept, named the FW-EVX, will be displayed on the UK National Composites Centre (stand, 6S72) with company representatives on hand to explain the breakthrough processes and technologies on show.

Craig Wilson, managing director of Williams Advanced Engineering, said: “As society looks to solutions for more sustainable mobility our industry needs to focus on lightweighting, aerodynamics and electrification. Williams Advanced Engineering’s people and capabilities offer our customers solutions to each and all of these challenges. We look forward to sharing our technologies with delegates at JEC World 2018.”

With the automotive industry currently focussed on how it transitions from the internal combustion engine to a fully electric future, a major challenge for manufacturers is how to maximise vehicle efficiency, given current limitations. Responding to this challenge, Williams Advanced Engineering has reimagined how electric cars are designed and constructed. This new approach is designed to make EVs lighter, safer and greener, with longer range and better performance. The concept features several innovations in battery pack design, cooling systems and lightweight structures, which have each been cleverly integrated into a single, scalable platform.

As an example, Williams’ engineers have developed a highly automated, near zero waste process. It is being implemented to create fibre reinforced suspension components on the EV platform, such as providing up to 40% weight reduction over a conventional aluminium wishbone and at comparable cost. This will be on show at JEC World in Paris on the FW-EVX.

JEC World takes place from the 6th to the 8th of March at the Paris Nord Villepinte exhibition centre.

Editor's comment: Weather with you

My work office feels unusually cold. As I type this, the BBC weather says it’s 10˚C outside. Hmm, is that typical for the end of April? Anyway, our landlord has deemed that with Spring now in the air, it’s time to turn off the heating and save money. This presents a challenge typing when I can’t feel my fingers.
